An open letter to my little sisters

Dear little sisters,

I’m a freshman in college and y’all are a freshman and a sophomore in high school. You’re going to laugh and love and learn and cry in the next couple years of your lives. You’ll figure out so much just by failing and succeeding along the way. Since graduating from high school and coming to college, my eyes have been opened to some new perspectives. Not everyone is outtclo5992 to see you succeed. Not everyone wants you to live up to your full potential. In fact, some people will tell you that you’re oppressed and you’re a second-class citizen because of your gender. Don’t listen to them. Women have stood up and fought for your freedoms to vote and speak out and have a career, or not; that’s up to you. Some people will look down on you if you decide you want to be a stay-at-home mom after you have your first child (if you decide to have kids). Don’t listen to them. Women have fought for you to have that choice, and the choice is yours alone. Some people will even say that you are setting women back 50 years if you vote for a Republican who doesn’t want abortion or birth control to be free or paid for by taxpayers. Don’t listen to them. If women truly want to be equal, they can pay for their own choices.

Don’t worry, not everyone is out to see you fail if you don’t fit into their ideas of what a woman should do to overthrow the patriarchy. It’s okay to want to be loved and cherished by a man. It’s okay to want a family more than you want a career. It’s okay to wear makeup and want to feel pretty. It’s okay to like compliments. It’s okay to be feminine. It’s okay if you’re not a feminist; that doesn’t make you a misogynist. Basically, I just want both of you to know that you will come across people who will tell you that you’re not good enough or that you aren’t helping the “cause,” but there are others who will support you in everything you do. People who will build you up, not tear you down. These people could be of any religious or political background. They don’t have to be Christian or Republican. They will just be genuine, kind people looking for you to succeed. Keep your mind open to everyone because you never know who you could end up being close to. Life is crazy, college is crazy, but make the most of it and be who God calls you to be.

Much love,

Your big sister

Annie, thank you for speaking truth into all of us, not just your sisters. It’s a nice break from the hate and opposition that we see everywhere else. Love that you connect your beliefs about the world with your beliefs about God.

  4. Thanks for sharing a loving approach to the twisted world we live in! Good job and keep ruffling feathers. That’s how you know you’re doing the right thing.
